Welcome to The Grotto

The Grotto is a internationally-renowned Catholic shrine and botanical garden located minutes from downtown Portland.  Formally The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, The Grotto provides a peaceful retreat for more than 300,000 visitors each year from all faiths and all walks of life.

The heart of the shrine is Our Lady’s Grotto, a rock cave carved into the base of a 110-foot cliff.  The Grotto’s Chapel of Mary, Stations of The Cross trail, Gift Shop, Conference Center and Visitor Complex are located on the plaza level with Our Lady’s Grotto.

In The Grotto’s Upper Level Gardens, visitors are delighted to discover the manicured gardens, religious artwork, and beautiful panoramic views of the Columbia River Valley and Mt. St. Helens.  Also on the upper level are the cliff side Meditation Chapel and the Servite Monastery.

There is no charge to visit The Grotto’s plaza level.  A small fee is charged to visit the Upper Level Gardens. Fee is shown below.

The Grotto is open daily at 9 a.m. throughout the year.

Closed Christmas Day and Thanksgiving following the daily Mass.

The Grotto offers understanding, compassion, support and hope through a variety of ministries including spiritual direction and liturgical celebrations.  Mass is celebrated in The Chapel of Mary daily.

The Grotto Conference Center provides a serene setting for business meetings, community workshops, or religious retreats.

The Grotto is a non-profit organization supported solely by the proceeds of its gift shop and donations. It is administered by the Order of Friar Servants of Mary, USA Province.  The Grotto endeavors to serve all people.
