Sandplay Therapy

Sandplay therapy is a psychotherapeutic tool used with children and adults. The method consists of the client’s creation of a three-dimensional picture with miniature figures in a tray of sand in the protective presence of a trained practitioner.”

The Grotto was given the generous gift of a very special collection of Sandplay miniatures by Rosalind Winter, LCSW, JA, an esteemed member of the Sandplay therapist community.

Rosalind was a long-standing member of the ISST (International Society of Sandplay Therapists) and the STA (Sandplay Therapists of America).  She was a renowned Jungian analyst who lectured worldwide, and developed a process she called Symbol Formation in response to the aftermath of 9/11.  She had been an analyst in NYC during the events of 9/11, and afterwards brought her method of Symbol Formation, a simplified form of Sandplay, into the nearby schools, training teachers and counselors in this method.

Rosalind had only lived in Portland a few short years before passing away from cancer at age 61, December, 2008.  She asked Diane Hyde, a Portland Sandplay therapist and colleague to tend to the dispersing of her Sandplay collection when she died. Diane Chose The Grotto to house this special collection.
