St. Anne's Chapel, built in 1933 for the first International Marian
Congress held in the United States, was the first chapel built on The Grotto's upper
level. Newspaper accounts of the congress place attendance between 20,000 and 60,000
visitors for the first internationally recognized event at The Grotto. The chapel,
long a favorite visiting place for prospective brides, contains a statue of St. Anne,
mother of Mary, and many Madonna paintings.
